New York: S/S 13 was a surprising and successful departure for Peter Som, adding a healthy dose of attitude to his usual prim aesthetic. In harmony with fashion’s recent obsession with feminine color and embellishment, the collection supplied a range of pastel separates and textured details, from icy floral skirts to relaxed-fit lace t-shirts with beaded collars. However, it was Som’s slouchy denim shorts, produced in collaboration with Earnest Sewn, which stood out among all the retro bra-tops and peplum bustiers, a casual item incongruously but effectively paired with pointy pumps. Cited by the designer as “Courtney Astor meets Courtney Love,” these freshly loosened-up ensembles, along with a smattering of a youthful, gilded leopard print, may just win Som a new downtown clientele come Spring.—Nina Stotler
