GIRL MEETS BED
London: Paul Smith has perfected the girl-meets-boy formula, finding dandyish muses in the gentlemen of Bakongo and Patti Smith in past collections. Having taken his tomboy from Africa to the East Village, what was there left to do but explore the more domestic territory of the bedroom? Smith tapped into the sleepwear craze this season, sending down casual drawstring pants, gauzy striped shirts and wrap dresses modeled after robes. Slouchy suits further relaxed into lightweight button-ups and boxy trousers – often as a matched set, pajama-style. One can always rely on Paul Smith for easy, inoffensive, thoroughly wearable clothes, and in a city known for its outrageous fashion, those qualities can be quite refreshing. – Nivara Xaykao
