Revered designer Azzedine Alaïa has been known for marching to the beat of his own drum for some time now, eschewing Fashion Weeks, trends, and the pressure to produce yearly collections in favor of his own timeline. With the opening of his new ‘maison’ in Paris, this living legend gives concrete form to his unique way of doing business. Located just off Avenue Montaigne (the city’s version of 5th Avenue) on Rue de Marignan and housed in a renovated 18th century townhouse, this multi-purpose space holds a showroom, offices, a workshop and a boutique, the first new retail presence for Alaïa since the 1992 shuttering of his New York store. Three-stories high and spanning 4,000 square meters, this minimalist new boutique features an amazing chandelier ‘descending’ the staircase, metal fixtures, and modular units for shoes. Focusing more on ready-to-wear and accessories than its sister store in the Marais, this new spot is a must-see when in Paris, but don’t try to find it by looking for window displays: in true Alaïa style, there are none to be found.— Ashley Churchill
