Fresh from the closet of Maria Elena Holly, the widow of Buddy Holly (whose death inspired the song “American Pie”), is a treasure trove of Buddy’s clothing, photographs and personal effects, consigned to Heritage Auction Galleries Beverly Hills’ April 9 Signature Music Memorabilia Auction.
The pieces includes an incredible 1959 Buddy Holly Apartment Tapes six-song acetate, featuring songs recorded just weeks before Buddy died, and a song never released, rare 45s of Buddy’s music, candid recording studio photos of Buddy singing, tour snapshots taken by Buddy and Maria Elena both, and a grouping of Buddy Holly’s personal clothing and and some of his favorite cigarette lighters. While the clothes may be basic, mid-century sportswear pieces, they not only come with refined and classic style but the provenance of a music legend.
His widow, now in her 70s, will be speaking at the auction about her late husband and these last few pieces that she has held onto for over 50 years.
