New York: Oscar de la Renta’s Picasso-inspired resort collection was one of his most notable in recent seasons. The designer focused on the artist’s Cubist period, borrowing the thick black lines, angular shapes and mixed materials of the movement. The palette of cream, tan, chocolate brown, red and black made the looks even more striking. The items themselves were classic de la Renta – slim sheaths, tailored pants, cropped jackets and voluminous skirts. Luxurious details, including pavé sequins, beading and flounces, lent a feeling of opulence. Though playful polka dots, texture motifs and stripes also appeared, the Cubist patterns were the highlight, proving de la Renta can still surprise us after all these years. –Joanna Manganaro
