Opulence and street mix at Balenciaga.

Paris: It is quite apparent in this Balenciaga collection that Alexander Wang is putting his own stamp on the house DNA. Wang was quoted as saying: “The society women, the aristocrats, the regal women.” . I try to respect the heritage and the history, but also add a twist.” He had in his mind, the original clientele at Balenciaga and how the then opulence would translate in to the modern customer,  “all served up with a little subversion”. His shapes were drawn straight from the archives – ovoid coats and jackets, waist-focused tulip skirts and shoulder revealing dresses all accessorized with glamorous pearl studs and pins. But then, there is the Wang twist – the street edge vibe – seams held together and rendered in metal staples, black leather belts that took the form of collars on jackets, tiny razor blades, gloves with hardware and of course, the flat chunky ankle boots. Yet, there was an overriding sexy element – glamorous eveingwear with ‘over-the-top’ jewelry, along with a slight boyish edge – a welcome relief of white shirts and cigarette pants that helped bridge the gap between Wang street and Balenciaga elegance. – Lizzy Bowring
