Bright and bold as ever, the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Soccer teams are set to debut their new Nike home kits on the field later this month, just in time for the Summer 2012 Olympics. Available in stores starting May 1st, the Men’s jersey will be the “must have” item for any true U.S. Soccer fan this summer. Nike has outfitted the kit with Dry-FIT technology and strategically placed laser-cut eyelets for ventilation, so fans can sport their relentless pride in style all the way through to the finals alongside the U.S. team.
Fun fact: in addition to innovative Nike Pro Combat technologies, the material is 23% lighter and 20% stronger than previous jerseys. The environmental impact was also taken into account, by utilization of nearly 100% recycled polyester for the shorts and shirt, and an average of 13 recycled plastic bottles for each kit. Now that is something to have national pride about!
Another fun fact: this is also the first time EVER that the Women’s kit (in stores July 1st) mirrors the same design and concept as the Men’s…maybe, just maybe, this will help to level the field for the Men’s team, as they are eager to share the relative successes that the Women’s team has achieved in the grand scheme of national soccer competition.
Regardless of the level of faith fans assume, there is no denying the rigor with which these kits were designed. With such a literal resemblance of the U.S. flag, the audacious red and white stripes are striking enough all on their own. It is the faint but purposeful tonal sash in the background, however, that undeniably qualifies the confident and perhaps intimidating essence of the piece. The theory is that this is a reiteration of such a detail on the jersey worn during the infamous victory by the U.S. Men’s team over England in the 1950 FIFA World Cup, an event obviously still worth treasuring.
