New York: Raf Simons dominated the fashion talk last night, and probably your Instagram stories feed with a show that was part theatre and part fashion. In a packed outdoor mini strip mall in New York’s Chinatown, editors were standing room only, waiting for the show to kick off at the rather unusually late time of 9.45pm (it actually started at 10pm). This was about a performance though, and anyone in the creative field knows not to rush artists.
The stage was set, think outdoor neon signs transformed from selling local wares to pushing Raf’s brand message: REPLICANTS. And the entire show was inspired by the chinatown scene in Blade Runner (see below, hence the models holding umbrellas as they walked down the makeshift runway). A$AP Rocky and Marc Jacobs walked around and guests sipped on Tsingtao beer. And then the Raf Simons Spring 2018 Menswear show begun. The key items were raincoats, oversized blazers, coats in futuristic silver and camouflaged headwear, but it was the magic of the full show with the key items that made the runway pop.
“In a city like New York, the menswear scene leans toward more commercial offerings, Raf’s show offered up that breath of fresh air that editors look forward to. The wearable streetwear elements were there, it wasn’t so theatrical that you couldn’t wear it, but design was at the heart of this collection, teamed with the quirky styling and innovative set design, which just elevated the whole affair,” said WGSN Senior Menswear Editor Brian Trunzo.
