NYFW: Versatile, detachable bags designed for consumers who have places to be

Shopping for bags often takes you on two paths. There are the times in your life when purchasing a bag takes on a practical note. There’s your first school bag, making sure it has ample space for all your school supplies. Then there’s your first work bag or briefcase, maybe with a nice leather bound diary inside. Then there’s the suitcase or a backpack for traveling/hiking.

The other path to bag shopping? Basing your decision on style and beauty factors. Less, does this stash my keys and phone well? And more, does the bag shape feel on trend, and is the colour something new that I haven’t seen before?

Very rarely do these two paths cross, and even rarer is it to see a runway bag that has the tagline, ‘functionality and utility’; the catwalk is where you go for fun, frivolity and outlandish designs. Or it was. This NYFW is seeing a shift towards those rather boring terms. The latest SS18 offerings resemble more that first satchel you bought, with a renewed emphasis placed on practicality, functional, utility-driven designs. This season’s cross body bags and bags worn across the waist come with detachable/shifting straps, perfect for the current cost-aware consumer who wants more for their money.

Call it the sportswear influence that we predicted here, or the fact that designers have realized that (particularly in these tumultuous times) their female consumer needs a bag that gets out of the way, and enables her to get sh*t done. These factors combined, have resulted in a selection of cross body bags and utility packs that manage to be both lust-worthy but also incredibly useful, which to be honest is what we need from our accessories.
