NYFW: Romance and feminism walk hand in hand at Jonathan Simkhai

Jonathan Simkhai

New York: The strength of womanhood is a common theme this season, with powerful silhouettes appearing on Catwalks, and Jonathan Simkhai presented his own version, after having considered the recent 100 year anniversary of the Suffragettes and Gibson girls as a starting point.

This element of history and romance appeared with ‘Basque’ jackets, leg o’ mutton sleeves, and corset detailing applied to a denim top worn over a grey hoodie which bore some semblance of street cool, while in contrast, belted tailoring in subtle checks were trimmed with lace.

A sense of modernity prevailed in the velvet trouser suit with just a peak of lace at the cuffs or in the leather wrap skirt worn with a belted sweater.

Elsewhere, Simkhai sent out delicate slip dresses carefully constructed in panels of velour and satin cut in diagonal panels, a perfect transition from boardroom to dinner – Lizzy Bowring
