London: Topman packed a lot into today’s Northern Soul inspired collection. The show had an analogue 80s feel, with the music playing off a cassette tape while live TV screens showed video projections of the models as they walked down the catwalk, spliced and distorted in super-saturated colours. The accompanying clothes drew from a range of decades, mixing patched and studded denims with shiny jersey tops and tracksuit bottoms, embellished leather truckers, and wide-leg cotton trousers paired with skin-tight knits. The mid section of the show took a more relaxed route with a sophisticated 50s and 90s mash-up. Stripy pyjama-style tailoring and voluminous pleated trousers in beige and blush silk, mingled with grey and pastel sportswear items such as jersey cagoules and nylon ponchos or 90s running shorts. Logo prints were used liberally on rainwear, trousers, tops, and t-shirts adorned with patches or badges. Despite the variety of references, the collection remained confident and cohesive, providing a contemporary and accessible take on popular themes for the younger menswear market. – Tom Crisp
