Every year, the Nike US Open of Surfing becomes bigger and bigger. So big so, that our camera lens wasn’t wide enough to capture the 40,000 plus people a day that descended upon Huntington Beach. On Sunday, the last day of the contest, 10-time ASP World Champion, Kelly Slater (a Stylesight favorite) and Sally Fitzgibbons – both from the Quiksilver and Roxy families – took 1st place at the podium, each racking in another win!
The Active Team spent several days in SoCal last week taking in the scene. We checked out the latest boardies and bikinis the Pros and attendees were sporting, and also watched the jam-packed sets from MGMT, The Sounds and Surfer Blood during the contest.
One of the biggest highlights for us was to interview “the golden child” of surfing… Australia’s own Julian Wilson. Over the last fives year, industry insiders have been comparing Wilson to a young Kelly Slater, so to have the chance to sit down with him was pretty amazing. Last summer we attended the premiere of Wilson’s, Red Bull sponsored film, Scratching the Surface – full disclosure, we still watch the trailer pretty regularly here in the office.
The best part about our chat with Wilson, was hearing about how stoked he is to link up with his new sponsor, Nike, and his long-term plans with the brand. Wilson additionally shared, that his involvement with the product, is hugely important and felt that he was “just getting started” on development. Nike’s Legacy range of 4-way stretch boardshorts, complete with DWR coated fibers, that repel water, and are made from materials derived from recycled water bottles. Not to mention, they are laser cut, ultra-lightweight and have bonded seams to reduce chaffing. Who knows what’s about to come out of Portland over the next few seasons?!
One of the coolest facts we found out about the pro is that this is the first year he is on the ASP World Tour full-time. Wilson said, he wanted to give himself a bit of time before jumping on the tour, considering the majority of his career would be dedicated to the competition life.
Also, on a fun side note, when the surfing star has small bits of breaks, he said his surfboards, “go into the garage and the golf clubs come out.” Wilson seems to be as passionate about the game of golf as he is about surfing. (And we’re sure another reason to link with Nike, one of the best golf brands to date.)
We’re already excited to see both Slater and Wilson come New York City next month for the Quiksilver Pro. It’s certainly going to be a-sight-to-see the world’s best surfers hanging out in our home turf! Get ready folks, it’s gonna be a doozy! – Jessica McMenamin
