The Active Team headed downtown to catch the Nike Unveil for the Team USA Track & Field gear last night in the West Village. Set against the backdrop of Flag Day, this patriotic event was bookended by President Obama passing through town, barricading Greenwich street for the passing fleet before and after the unveil. A great kickoff for Team USA! First glances into the space provided Nike Sportswear looks ready to hit the Olympic Village, fusing together the brand’s innovative touch with classic cuts and colors.
The US Track & Field Team is ready to compete this summer, outfitted by Nike’s Project Swift, developed from over 1,000 hours of wind tunnel testing and insights from the fastest in the world – more on that later – the innovation collection is lightweight, bold, and aerodynamic. The Nike AeroSwift technology utilizes a dimpled surface (as on a golf ball) to strategically reduce drag on the athlete. We especially love the leggings below, this dimpled detail may only be for the pros this summer, but as with all innovative design expect to see a variety of spotted surfaces on running gear in seasons to come.
Introducing the gear that is ready for the next set of Olympic hopefuls meant seeking wisdom to those who have come before us. Joining the unveil was Olympic legends Carl Lewis, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, and Michael Johnson. All attributed to the struggle and accomplishment that comes with this experience, they spoke about their personal experiences with receiving and wearing the Team USA uniforms.
Jackie Joyner-Kersee, one of the greatest all-time athletes with three gold, one silver, and two bronze medals, expressed her excitement to belong to Team USA.
“They would give us these duffle bags, full of all kinds of different stuff. I just couldn’t wait to get my USA uniform, because it was something about being on Team USA overall that was important. [The uniforms] were polyester at that time and the straps had the ‘USA’ on them. At that time, when you made an Olympic team, only YOU could wear the USA uniform, you couldn’t go down to the local store and buy it. That was the great thing, being able to say that you are apart of an exclusive group, you didn’t know it at that time, but you were. And I loved that.”
When asked how significant the color of the uniforms were, all shared the sentiment that red is a powerful color that will pop through athletic performance and visually on screen, a good sign as the uniforms have been blue in the past. Michael Johnson, known for his partnership with Nike to create his gold shoes for the 1996 Atlanta Games, stated “if you look good, you feel good.”
