New York…Carolina Herrera

If there was an award for “most dramatic shift in style” it would go to Carolina Herrera. Who could forget last season’s melange of tweed, plaid, and various other country quirks? With nary a pheasant feather in sight, for S/S 09 Mrs. Herrera brought her woman back to Park Avenue and swathed her in layered ruffles. It was undoubtedly dressy and embellished but two salient points saved it from being in any way too sweet or cloying. First, the color palette was strong, matching lipstick red to jet black and stark white; and then there was masculine tailoring. One girl wore a man’s tux jacket around her shoulders (was this the morning after? was she making the “walk of shame”? Perhaps, but what is clear is the intention to say, “Forget the recession, forget doom and gloom, let’s party” or at least wear our party clothes anytime of the day or night.
