RUSTIC AND REFINED
London: Nicole Farhi has built her reputation on wearable sportswear that changes subtly with the currents of the season but still retains a sophisticated, feminine sensibility at its core. Spring found Farhi swept up in the wave of minimalism spreading through fashion, along with a twin dose of Space Age artifice and raw-edged earthiness. The former was introduced in clean shifts sliced through with contrast-colored fractals, techno satin trench coats and iridescent foil finishes. Farhi grounded these futuristic references with organic textures: gauzy tees tempered PVC-coated pencil skirts and crinkle treatments mellowed out the techno sheen on slouchy suits and long, languid skirts. A series of simple gauzy dresses were a stand out, ranging from knee-length shifts to body-hugging maxis, and printed with blurred watercolor florals. Farhi was at her best in these moments that mixed the ultra-refined with the rustic, the restrained with the romantic – a comfortable middle ground that ultimately best suits her audience.
