Golden eyes. It sounds like something out of a James Bond movie. But it’s real. Indian optometrist Chandrashekhar Chawan was inspired by his wife (who had diamonds planted on her teeth) to make golden contacts. This made him realize that jewelry can be everywhere. Et voila, diamond encrusted, gold plated contact lenses. He uses Boston Scleral lenses to hold the jewelry in such a way that it doesn’t touch the cornea and predicts that it will be the next big thing in Bollywood and perhaps the new engagement ring. A pair goes for $15,000 and all proceeds will go towards treating patients suffering from Steven’s Johnson Syndrome.
Bijules NYC also debuted 24K contact lenses in her S/S 11 Haute Couture Collection: Le Nez de Tycho. The collection tells the story of Renaissance alchemist Tycho Brahe who lost his nose in a duel and wore a gold replacement.
“We always talk eye to eye,” Chawan told TODAY.com, “and if your eyes are sparkling with diamonds, no one can look away; their eyes will be glued to you and your personality.”
He has a point.
