NEW YORK: The Newsstand

The lack of cell phone service in underground subway stations is finally enjoyable, at least at the Metropolitan Avenue station in Williamsburg. Welcome to The Newsstand, an independent print media take over by way of pop-up. Produced by ALLDAYEVERYDAY and curated by Lele Saveri of the 8-Ball Zine Fair, The Newsstand features over 100 works from independent publishers around the world. This underground space adapts the original subway newsstand format, but instead provides an opportunity to showcase the leading zines and artists’ publications today. The Newsstand is brimming with selections from the city’s best-known specialty bookshops including McNally-Jackson, Dashwood Books, Desert Island, and OHWOW, alongside a range of independent music complete with a vinyl listening station. And to enhance the collaborative effort of the independent art scene, local artists are recruited each day as guest clerks. So if you’re headed over the bridge before July 20th, be sure to stop by and show your support. –Sarah Ryan Hecht
