Known primarily for his gritty, urban fashion-focused portraits, designers Peter Som and Derek Lam have both cited the work of legendary Yale-educated painter Barkley L. Hendricks as a source of inspiration. Lately his work has been shoe focused, with a recent painting featuring a particularly fetching pair of pumps adorned with the visage of Marilyn Monroe. If you’re in New York anytime from now until April 6th, stop by Chelsea’s Jack Shainman Gallery to see his unique take on street style, which he has been documenting for over 40 years, in addition to his photography and landscapes. xx Ashley Churchill
