New York Fashion Week Wrap

L to R: Michael Kors, Behnaz Sarafpour, Proenza Schouler, Ralph Lauren

With the economy in a state of flux, women want to make wise purchases and are anticipated to veer between fast fashion and high-end designer pieces for Fall 09. New York designers used four major plush materials, including both real and faux fur, wool/gabardine and wool/cashmere, satin and velvet to create ultra-luxurious investment pieces. Remaining a constant from last fall, fur was used for jackets, coats and trims in tones ranging from natural colors to the ubiquitous new neon shades of the season. For outerwear, designers made a shift away from using quilted nylon for parkas in favor of wool mixes that were molded into hour-glass shapes. Shiny satin was used to accentuate feminine sheath dresses in rich colors like teal and stone. Finally there was plenty of soft, panné velvet used for pants and skirts, often in refreshing flesh tones.
