Earlier this month, Zip Stevenson of Hollywood Trading Company and Denim Doctors relocated his store from Beverly Blvd to the new upcoming area of West Adams Blvd.
Zip Stevenson is one of LA’s most seasoned veterans in American vintage. His passion for raw denim and searching out handcrafted vintage leather belts led to him to found Denim Doctors in 1994 and Hollywood Trading Company (HTC) shortly after. The Denim Doctors program, which specializes in vintage collectable and high-end repro denim, has grown to become one of LA’s best restoration and alteration services and receives orders from across the country as well as Europe and Japan. Meanwhile, HTC has become the gold standard in high-quality vintage accessories, especially its signature studded belts that have become an essential for vintage freaks the world over. Zips latest project, IrregulaR, a footwear brand that upcycles deadstock and used/vintage leather boots is also taking off.
With the three businesses growing and thriving respectively, Zip recently took the initiative to pull everything together in under one roof in its new home on West Adams Blvd. Together the HQ, retail space and design studio create a singular expression of the overall HTC brand and unity between design, product and customer. Like the previous Beverly Blvd. store, the new expanded space (which opened only last week Feb 4) features an authentic character with dark wood panelling, industrial furniture and fixtures along with some collectable furnishings like Levi’s and Lee banners, super long jeans and boro blankets that line the fitting room. The tower of leather belts and wall of leather boots are also standout features.
Next door you’ll find Zip’s workshop where HTC and IrregulaR goods are masterfully crafted. Inside a small team of local artisans work on a range of vintage hand-operated tools to intricately build and carefully rehabilitate the leather goods. It’s these talented craftsman that Zip credits as the key to the brands success. Take a stroll around the studio floor and the first thing you notice is the vast amount of raw materials spread out amongst the machinery. Piles of leather sheets, in a variety of sensuous earthy tones lay rack after rack, while boxes and boxes of vintage footwear are scattered under the worktops or amongst the shelves, waiting to be reborn. The amount of specialist tools and other apparatuses that line the workshop are testimony to the brand’s rugged handcrafted authenticity.
