New Music: Porches emerge as a one-to-watch post-SXSW

Each year we scout over 2000 international acts at Austin’s SXSW festival to filter down our top ten. Porches happened to be one that caught our attention when we visited Urban Outfitter’s free day party at their campus-area Space 24 store. Take a look (and listen) now!

Who are they: Aaron Maine

Hometown: Pleasantville, NY

Label: Domino

About: Porches, created by Aaron Maine, evolved from two previous bands. Beginning back in 2010, Porches have been tumbleweeding into success since their first EP release in January 2011. Musician (and romantic partner) Frankie Cosmos frequently collaborates with the band, and have been interviewed by The Fader about their relationship with both music and each other. Porches played SXSW last month after releasing their latest album titled Pool.

The Look: Casual cool with an array of vintage (and somewhat ironic) influences. Basics are best for Porches.

The Sound: Synth-pop featuring the odd melancholic lyric with an electronic feel. Lead singer Aaron Maine says, “I want people to feel dark, beautiful and strong when they hear this new record.”

Essential Track: ‘Be Apart’ from the new album ‘Pool’
