New Kids on the Boardwalk

Rockaway Beach Queens New York

Rockaway Beach

City slickers and Brooklyn hipsters are flocking to Rockaway Beach in Queens for the sun, the surf and most of all, the food. From Thai-style burgers to tacos, you’re in for a treat courtesy of these new kids on the boardwalk.

Rockaway Beach

David Selig and Andrew Field, of Rockaway Taco, took over a handful of boardwalk stands and carefully selected restaurants to open up water front locations in an effort to serve new and improved beach fare to locals and day-trippers alike. Here are some favorites.

Babycakes The Rockaways

Guilt free goodies from vegan bakery Babycakes.

Ode to the Elephants The Rockaways

From Rincon, Puerto Rico, Ode to the Elephants has surfer cred and its reputation is only getting better with this menu of beach-friendly Thai dishes.

Don’t be discouraged by the lines, these tacos are made with some serious TLC and well worth the wait. If you’re a real taco lover and feel a need for seconds, pop around the corner to the original location on Rockaway Boulevard for the famous fish tacos.

Motorboat and the Big Banana

While the savory dishes at this stand are extraordinary, chocolate covered frozen bananas, need I say more?

Caracas The Rockaways Rock Beach Club 2011

Venezuelan Arepas are smaller than a burger and more filling that a taco so, these are best for a mid-day snack with an order plantains on the side.

Rippers Rockaway Beach Queens New York

No beach boardwalk is complete without somewhere to grab a classic (grass-fed) burger and a spicy lemonade – thank you Rippers.

While the overnight accommodation sector of the area is slightly lacking, there is one option if you can to get a room. And by room I mean houseboat. The floating rest-stop also hosts movie nights on an 8 x 12 foot screen. Download the PDF of dates and times from FluxFactory.
