At our recent trip to Rin Tanaka’s Inspiration show, we discovered a number of exciting denim treasures, one of which is new denim brand, Blue Blanket, by non other than Italian denim guru, Antonio Di Battista.
Antonio Di Battista is an Italian Designer who has been involved in the denim business for more than 20 years, running a consultancy firm in Italy for high-end denim brands, leading household names and even prestigious mills such as Orta Anadolu. His frequent trips to California and Japan, world poles of vintage and innovation, get him the inspiration for his work. Over his time in the business he has amassed a vintage denim archive of over 3,000 garments, so to say he is interested in archival denim is an understatement!
Talking to Sportswear International at the Inspiration show:
“The inspiration and the mood of the collection is American,” says Di Battista. “Because I am a denim collector, I really love it and I have a lot of knowledge about American denim. Seems strange for an Italian to make something that is so American but for 25 years, I have collected denim so I am ready to do something with my knowledge.”
Blue Blanket is indeed inspired by American workwear. The collection is relatively small as it’s in the first season, but stand-out garments include the split-back trouser in pinstripe, the watchpocket railroad chore coat (pictured above) and a fantastic worker’s apron. All denim comes raw, using age-old sewing techniques and the highest standards of cut and make. The focus is on quality union-made goods that hark back to a time when clothes were made to endure.
And the brand name, Blue Blanket?“The brand name has originated according to the idea that jeans provide me with a sense of security and desire to have them with me forever. They are something that live with me and take on the shape of my body day after day, and tell how I live my life by showing the way in which they are used,” Antonio Says.
“I have read somewhere that in American slang the term “blue blanket” is utilized for something from which you can’t be separated and having it with you grants tranquility and security.”
A sweet story and a great brand, we look forward to seeing more of the product in seasons to come! Check out Antonio’s tumblr for more brand images and info
