New Balance is gearing up to shed those winter pounds with help from the best, fitness expert and celebrity personal trainer Harley Pasternak. Known for shaping up ultra-stars including Rihanna – who looked smashing earlier this week at the Grammies – as well as Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, he is also known for his numerous media appearances as a fitness and nutrition specialist, and creating the 5 Factor Diet. A long-time advisor to New Balance, Pasternak is ready to coach the masses for the launch of his first name-sake version of the 997.
The Active Team was excited to join Pasternak this week for an early morning session to test out the new training kick. His regime requires no equipment, with a series of squats, lunges, upper body work, and sets of simple yet effective ab work for a full body workout. Harley pays close attention to technique (during lunges let your knee bend!) and making every move count, which we appreciate. Ending with suicide-style sprints and a lap of side-shuffle, it’s easy to recognize the need for stable footwear that can handle fast direction change and lateral movement.
The 997 offers the needed stability for a gym floor routine. Unlike a typical running shoe, the shoe provides a low midsole with extra support for the sides of the feet, to benefit those lateral movements. With a generous toe bed and the expected components of a training shoe – smooth ride, breathable, comfortable midsole – the shoe allowed confident moment through extra ankle stability. The 997 will be available in two colorways, Pasternak’s own pick of Blue/Lime sporting some nice ombré touches, and a Black/Magenta pairing for ideal wearability and versatility.
As the fitness market continues to supply athletes with performance-specific models, shoe construction and crucial details can offer footwear that is safe according to activity and optimum potential. It’s great to see New Balance continue to fill a specific fitness category through offering a fit with that extra bit of stability on the gym floor.
A special thanks to New Balance and Harley Pasternak, time spent with a truly positive and energetic team is a great way to start the day! Kicking off the final push through these last winter months here in New York, the Active Team can’t wait for the spring fitness trends and challenges to come. -Calvy Click
