Neil Barrett

Milan: Some designers flourish under strict constraints and Neil Barrett surely falls into this category. For F/W 13 he whittled his palette to anemic proportions, limited to basic neutrals and a pop of cherry as well as a uniform silhouette of skinny trousers topped by round shoulder jackets and coats. But somehow the results were never boring, due in part to Barrett’s masterful dissemination of luxurious leathers, double-faced knits, mohair and velvet, materials pieced into sliced patchworks or roughed up for a fuzzy halo effect. Sport, another Barrett obsession, was never far behind with precise must-haves like spongy crewneck sweatshirts and fitted baseball caps, their gorgeous simplicity making a strong case for the wisdom of aesthetic restrictions.—Nina Stotler
