New York: Convicts’ mug-shots from the 1920s and 30s inspired this season’s N.Hoolywood collection by Japanese designer Daisuke Obana. His first showing in New York featured lineups of models straight from the street behind viewing windows. Some looks, like a striped cardigan over a matching T-shirt, were true to jailbird garb, whereas other items, like high-waisted pants and boxy tailored clothing, seemed inspired by gangsters, pre-incarceration. Amusing storyline aside, Obana’s clothes are a testament to Japanese “eye for detail” design. Vintage details looked contemporary with tweaked fits in luxurious fabrics.
