Italian director Luca Guadagnino’s new film, I Am Love (Io Sono L’amore), is a visually stunning tale of wealthy textile industry family, the Recchis. With culinary close-ups, a score from Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Adams and an inimitable wardrobe provided by Jil Sander and the house of Fendi, the film is a feast for the senses.
Reminiscent of classic cinema, when fashion houses played an integral part in the film narrative, director Guadagnino collaborated with the two Italian fashion stalwarts. Favoring a classic look for most of the Recchis, costume designer Antonella Cannarozzi used vintage furs from Fendi to outfit Marisa Berenson’s Recchi matriarch and finely tailored suits for the men of the family.
For Tilda Swinton’s Jil Sander-clad Emma, the film’s wardrobe was not just an aesthetic choice but an integral part in underlining the development of Swinton’s character. Head designer at Sander, Raf Simons, set out to “make a responsive wardrobe for an uncommunicative person”, designing each piece to reflect an “extremely subtle dialogue” for Swinton’s character. One of the most colorful and iconic pieces in the film- a simple red sheath dress- is worn to signal that Emma has fallen in love.
I Am Love is playing in theaters nationwide. Tilda Swinton’s red Jil Sander dress is available for purchase online.
