If you are interested in working in fashion and retail, whether that’s in the design studio or as a fashion CEO in the boardroom, there is a plethora of content to help you on every step of the career journey. But while most of us know the key films to watch for industry insight (From The September Issue to Bill Cunningham New York), and the books to dive into (The Battle of Versailles, Tales from the Back Row: An Outsider’s View from Inside the Fashion Industry & From A to Biba etc) we haven’t always got the time for that. For the time-poor among us, who want to squeeze some fashion and retail insight into our commute, here are the go-to podcasts:
SHOWstudio: If you’re on the lookout for in-depth fashion interviews with everyone from key stylists to established designers this is the podcast to download. Past guests on Nick Knight’s fashion podcast have included everyone from British designer and lover of colour Matthew Williamson to new menswear talent Craig Green. There’s also live video to go alongside the interviews, so you can follow along on your commute or watch while at your desk.
Nasty Gal #GirlBoss Radio: Fashion is an industry that is dominated by women, but equal pay is still an issue and a lot of men still hold the top roles. Happily, this podcast is offering up female heroes in shape of retail founders and CEOs. So far Nasty Gal founder Sophia Amoruso has interviewed everyone from IntoTheGloss founder Emily Weiss to Christene Barberich, Global Editor-in-Chief & Co-Founder, Refinery29.
Man Repeller. This fashion (with a huge dose of humour and humility) site has two podcasts to check out: Oh Boy, and Monocycle. Oh Boy is a series of cool interviews with fashion stars like Garance Dore to publicist Katie Sturino, while Monocycle covers everything from The Man Repeller online editorial process to dealing with burnout.
Glossy: A weekly show, this podcast discusses key talking points around the fashion and luxury industry and how tech is impacting that, along with the key players in the tech/fashion crossover field. Look out for a guest appearance from WGSN staffers Andrea Bell and Sarah Owen.
The Needle and The Mouse: This podcast comes from journalist Lauren Sherman who currently writes for the Business of Fashion and her husband. Lauren gives a super interesting perspective on all things fashion related, from the state of classic American retail to the relationship between creative directors and visual merchandisers. Her husband Dan, who is editor in chief of Recode, offers a tech perspective on current events. But the best is when these two worlds come together with the launch of the Apple Watch for example.
The Secret Emotional life of Clothes: Ok, this one is not technically a podcast, more of an episode. It talks about how we feel when we are wearing items and how it changes how we perceive clothes, and how people perceive us in the garments. A key subject was about hooded tops and race, and how people react to what we wear in a highly emotional way.
