THE EDGE OF INNOCENCE
New York: Cheap and Chic, the younger sister of the Moschino label, showed its rebellious side for Pre-Fall. Skirts were hiked up high, motorcycle jackets were slick and tight, and accessories were scattered with metal studs. The back of a woven tee was emblazoned with the word “Bondage.” There was something about the printed frocks, flat oxfords, dark purple lipstick, and kohl-rimmed eyes that recalled 90s grunge. One could almost imagine one of the angst-y teens on My So-Called Life sporting many of the looks. But designer Rossella Jardini mixed in enough tailored pieces and prim tops to give the collection an air of innocence and sophistication. She also included her signature trompe l’oeil elements in the form of piecing and beading made to look like collars. The appealing juxtaposition of naughty and nice was a step in the right direction for the label and a positive way to kick off the Pre-Fall collections. –Joanna Manganaro
