Morphing Mother Nature

L to R: Alexander McQueen F/W 09, Free Form Rugs, Woodblock 1942, iPhone

The influence of MC Escher’s play of positive and negative appeared on dresses at one of the most controversial shows of the F/W 09 season, Alexander McQueen. His fanciful show took birds as a reference and morphed them from geometric shapes into fully flying figures. With fashion reflecting art, it’s no surprise to see more of the artist’s influence on prints and graphics for home furnishings and technologies. The optical illusion of metamorphosis has appeared on area rugs by Free Form Rugs and even on the iPhone, with protective sleeves inspired by Eshcer’s wood block fish prints.
