We continue our profiles of the most creative presenations of New York Fashion Week with Moncler’s new Grenoble collection. The scene for the new line from the luxe outerwear label was an otherworldly setting at Chelsea Piers’ Pier 59, which is usually a golf driving range. The multi-tiered fixture was transformed into an outdoor performance space that resembled the set of a Robert Wilson play or a Kraftwerk concert: rows of stacked, squared-off scaffolding, stretching high into the cold and snowy night air (could Moncler have asked for more fitting weather conditions to underline its Alpine-chic mission?), filled with intrepid models standing at attention. Helicopters circled overhead, swarming around a nearby Piers landing pad. Waiters passed around thermoses of warm spiced wine and hot chocolate. The whole thing was like a scene out of a James Bond-thwarts-radical-ski-terrorists flick—one of Fashion Week’s smartest, most memorable moments so far.
