BACK TO BASICS
New York: Maison Martin Margiela’s diffusion label, MM6, was focused on relaxed basics this season. There were T-shirts, anoraks, cropped cargo pants and openwork sweaters. While many items were straightforward, others drew on the avant-garde sensibility for which the house of Margiela is known. Drawstrings were placed in unexpected places, including around the neck of an oversized lilac shirt. The drawstrings also tied two side panels of a dress together in front. The color palette was soft and ethereal, made up of the aforementioned lilac, muted beige, periwinkle, and silver. The silver lamé looks that closed the show – a floor-sweeping coat and a simple square neck column dress – were decidedly un-flashy despite the flamboyant fabric. The focus here was on simplicity and ease.–Joanna Manganaro
