Milan: Maybe it was the Olympics that got Angela Missoni thinking about sports. Her spring collection was scattered with references to competitive swimming. There were obvious ones, such as full-coverage one-piece swimsuits and goggles, but the inspiration was also felt in more subtle ways. Racer necklines and contrast trim hinted at swimwear influences without being overly referential. Rather than being cooped up at the indoor pool, Missoni’s swimmers seemed to prefer the beach. Tonal green paillettes and embroidery recalled the moss found on beach rocks, glittering tiny sequins evoked the glint of the sun off the water, and orange ombré patterns seemed to represent a dramatic seaside sunset. –Joanna Manganaro
