Since launching in 2005, Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy have amassed multiple awards, created the costumes for Black Swan and now have their second solo exhibition.
Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art is home to Rodarte: States of Matter, a showcase consisting of 20 pieces spanning three collections and the original ballet costumes donned by Natalie Portman in her Oscar-winning role as Nina Sayers aka the Swan Queen. Known for their intricate and unconventional textiles and production techniques, the pieces have been put on display not as dresses, but as sculptural artifacts suspended in space and time. Longtime Rodarte collaborator Alexandre de Betak is responsible for the exhibition design, which in and of itself is a sight to be seen. -Christina Mannatt
