Milan Design Week 2018: Three must-see exhibitions

Milan Design Week

Next week, the design industry descends on Milan for Salone del Mobile and Fuorisalone, the city-wide events that, together, make up Milan Design Week. The biggest and most influential event on the design and interiors calendar, Milan sets the trend agenda for the year(s) ahead. Quite simply, it’s unmissable. But where to go first, with hundreds of events, talks and exhibitions filling the schedule?

WGSN to the rescue. Here, we highlight three shows that look full of promise. To see more of our agenda – the events that our editors are personally most looking forward to – subscribers can access our full Milan Design Week 2018 – Preview.

Dutch Invertuals: Mutant Matter

Dutch Invertuals never disappoints. Its annual Milan show is known for its blend of high-concept thinking and rich materiality. This year, the experimental Dutch design group partners with FranklinTill to present Mutant Matter, an exploration of ‘supernatural materials’ – human-made resources that are now being remade into the inspirational materials of tomorrow.

Design Academy Eindhoven: Not For Sale

Prestigious design school Design Academy Eindhoven is taking a radical approach to its show this year, challenging its students to respond to the live community and local infrastructure of Milan. Via Crespi and Via Varanini will be the site for design interventions including an osteria turned into a basic income café, a laundromat that becomes a sandal-making factory, and a newsstand distributing a new publication called Misinformation Times.

Norwegian Presence: Everything Is Connected

Situated in one of Milan Design Week’s most bustling districts, Zona Tortona, Norwegian Presence‘s show brings together work by 30 Norwegian designers and craftspeople. The theme this year is Everything Is Connected, which looks at how a creative culture, sense of place and natural influences all shape a particular design culture. Norwegian designers are renowned for their sensitive use of materials and finishes, and this exhibition is shaping up to be a highlight for CMF.
