New York: In an interview regarding his latest Pre Fall collection, Michael Kors happened to mention his excitement about Scarlett Johansson’s upcoming role in the Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams’ 1955 play, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. The reference provided a key to the inspiration behind his collection. 1950s-style full skirts, angora sweaters, fur stoles, and boxy jackets were in heavy rotation, and prim accessories, such as cat-eye glasses, pointy-toe pumps, and long leather gloves supported the look. But Kors kept the collection from feeling too referential by peppering in sleek contemporary items. The bonded leather pieces were a particular highlight, their heavy silver zippers and straps lending a bondage-y counterpoint to the more proper looks. Kors brilliantly mixed the seemingly incongruous styles, and the result seemed tailor-made for a modern-day version of Maggie the Cat. –Joanna Manganaro
