Michael Bastian

New York: New York darling Michael Bastian took a one-season break from the runways after he took control of his namesake company from longtime licensee and Italian cashmere maestro Brunello Cucinelli. The newly-crowned CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year came back to the Big Apple catwalks with a familiar collection all about sexy classics and all-American angst. As an homage to the ultimate rebel himself, James Dean, the red-carpeted runway featured the style icon’s image in the background, and a collection full of models who personify what the legendary actor would be today. As a former merchant himself, Bastian’s clothes are decidedly retail-friendly and full of preppy spirit that’s as American as apple pie. Wardrobe staples with subtle James Dean references popped up throughout the show — from the red Harrington jacket and penny loafers to a sweater inspired by Roy Schatt’s iconic “torn sweater” series, and a jumpsuit inspired by his love of fast cars. Bastian made a bold decision to take a season off, but the lower retails, familiar look of his designs, and magical quality of his shows puts him back in the driver’s seat as one of New York’s most dependable designers.  —Michael Fisher
