THE SECRET LIVES OF ENGLISHMEN
New York: With a slightly edgier collection than his usual polished East Coast look, Michael Bastian cited his inspiration as, “The Savile Row guy who’s secretly a skinhead or the banker fellow with the punk background.” To express this collision of proper Brit and West End thug, the designer showed jeans with rips, dangling suspenders and hulking boots, all sharing the runway with classic tartans, corduroy suitings and tailored double-breasted vests. The rumpled nature of many of the fabrics had a “stayed out all night” mood about them, and casual styling such as pushed up jacket sleeves and rolled pants showed this former Bergdorf Goodman fashion director’s easy-going design approach. Shattered glass was thrown on the runway, further hinting at the rebellious side of a typically preppy collection.
