Milan: Freedom 90! George Michael’s rousing lyrics, a fluttering curtain and then that spectacle – 5 icons in their own right – drenched in chainmail metallic gold that slithered over their still lithesome forms. A momentous entrance – Donatella took her bow with Claudia, Naomi, Cindy, Carla, Helena – who could top this finale? But let’s rewind for a moment. Donatella Versace staged her S/S 18 show at Milan’s Triennale museum, for two reasons, one as a tribute to her late brother, the other, a celebration of his creations. To the repetitive chant of “a genius, an icon, my brother.. because of you, we are not afraid”, Donatella sent out a showstopping collection of prints, items, and silhouettes, that were taken from the archives circa 1991 -1995 and gave them futuristic relevance. She lifted them literally from themes such as Marilyn Munroe, James Dean, Warhol, Elton John, Baroque prints, Animalia, Tresor de la Mer, to mention a few, and reinterpreted them into vignettes of blouses, cropped little black jackets, body-skimming dresses, leggings, and catsuits, it was so unadulterated and so sexy.
Elsewhere, Baroqueprints adorned flippy little black crepe skirts, mini slip dresses and thigh-high boots; it was upbeat and nostalgic and just the right amount to make us fall in love with Versace all over again.
