Milan Fashion Week: The socio-political messages are a common thread throughout A/W 18 collections and for Miuccia Prada, her’s was about protection.
She had been thinking about women going out in the night, and how ‘women have to be strong and protected, aggressive and powerful..but with the characteristics of femininity’.
Prada catapulted us in to the future with a provocative and mesmerising presentation. It began with the blackened cityscape, punctuated with neon signs, a monkey, bananas, a spider. And as dark as the sky, a black mirrored floor onto which, as if shards of a shattered prism, strode her creations – a vibrant mix of polar opposites – femininity and power.
The femininity, in sweet dresses of layers of neon tulle, tweeds, florals and bows, the power, in menswear materials, protective hi-tech nylons and sports details. ‘My dream,’ she said, ‘is for women to be able to go out in the street and not be afraid. I wanted to have the freedom exaggerated’. So surreal but poignantly truthful. – Lizzy Bowring
