Memmo Alfama, view from the Lisbon hotel

In case you hadn’t heard, team City by City Travel are currently touting Lisbon as a Style City to watch for 2016, inspiring for its rich colour and print inspiration across the Azulejo and graffiti covered buildings, as well as its contemporary design scene and innovative cuisine. Associate Editor Emily Cater travelled there in early May to get the low down, staying at the beautiful boutique hotel Memmo Alfama in the city’s picturesque old town.

If planning a trip to Lisbon, here’s three reasons why you should book at the Memmo Alfama:

1. The Location

Situated in the picturesque old town of Alfama, not only is the hotel less than a 10 minute walk from the centre, nearby guests will find quaint traditional Portuguese shops, authentic restaurants and warm, weathered terracotta rooftops to look out upon. Perhaps one of the biggest draws to the city is the magnificent Sao Jorge castle just a short stroll away, boasting incredible panoramic views of the city and perfect for photos. Also nearby is the cathedral and the twice-weekly Feira da Ladra flea market, where all sorts of trinkets, homeware, fashion and jewellery can be picked up. If you’re after a typically Portuguese meal at an atmospheric backstreet restaurant complete with Fado (a traditional Portuguese music genre), the hotel’s neighbourhood of Alfama is undoubtedly the best place to be.

2. The interior design

Housed in an imposing 19th century building, the interiors for Memmo Alfama are minimalistic, clean and stylish, featuring a lot of warm blues and white walls, and an abundance of wood for a Scandinavian-meets-Mediterranean feel. Bedrooms feature high quality linens, natural woods, and a palette of cool greys, while bathrooms comprise polished concrete floors, sleek infinity sinks and large rain showers, brightened up with bright yellow toilet rolls to echo the area’s famous yellow tram. We especially love the cosy reading rooms located between the breakfast room and reception which were originally bakeries, with some of their original features still intact.

Undoubtedly one of the hotel’s most memorable and instagrammable highlights is the huge outdoor terrace and pool bar. Head up the stairs past the breakfast room and wine bar and walk through the sliding glass doors to reveal magnificent views of Alfama and the river Tagus. Sleek Carrara marble tables and chic poolside seating line the bar – the perfect spot for a cocktail after a long day’s exploring, and why not order some Portugese tapas like fresh octopus salad whilst admiring the view. Though the red mosaic tiled pool was a dash too cold for a swim on our visit, it’s perfect for a quick dip when things really heat up. Bliss.
