The National Gallery of Victoria is currently hosting a retrospective of renowned French couturier Jean Paul Gaultier’s design, showcasing the designer’s unconventional career spanning 35 years. The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk features more than 140 garments in addition to photographs, sketches, stage costumes, excerpts from catwalk shows, film, television, concerts and dance performances. Among them are couture dresses worn by Nicole Kidman and Kylie Minogue and other Australian muses for Gaultier, as the touring exhibition celebrates its Australian edition. Spanning 1970 to 2014, the exhibition celebrates the designer’s daring inventiveness and cutting-edge style through seven themes tracing influences on his creative development, from the streets of Paris to the world of science fiction. Visitors can expect to see Madonna’s infamous cone bras from her 1990 Blond Ambition tour as well as the designer’s first collection for Hermès and first haute couture collection amongst others. Jean Paul Gaultier ended his ready-to-wear prêt-à-porter lines last year to focus on haute couture, fragrance and various special projects. – Maria Mao Cui
