Melbourne, Australia: A mini-travel guide to the city

In Melbourne, food and fashion are basically the city’s favourite past times. So in keeping with this idea, live from the WGSN office in Melbourne I’ve curated the definitive mini food and fashion guide for anyone coming to the city. See below for your guide to the best eats, exhibitions and most delicious cocktails if you’re in town soon (and if you are around on August 3rd, may I suggest you attend our WGSN Designing Summer: Lifestyle, Interiors & Retail Trends S/S 16 to S/S 18 trend seminar, details below).

Eat at: Lune Croissanterie…

Lune Croissanterie

Notorious for customers waiting out as early at 3:30am, there’s no wonder the New York Times have posed the question “Is the World’s Best Croissant Made in Australia?”.

Lune Croissanterie1

What started off as a hole-in-the-wall pastry business in 2012 has seriously evolved into the very sleek, very Melbourne converted warehouse space in Fitzroy – complete with Star Wars inspired LED light installations and climate-controlled cube, designed to keep croissant crazed customers out (just kidding – it’s where the croissants are artfully prepared at a perfect 18 degrees). Items on the menu include traditional variations, some twice baked and an assortment of glorious cruffin’s (croissant and muffins love child for those new to the term).

Open from 7:30am Thursday, Friday, Monday, and 8am on Saturday and Sunday. 119 Rose St, Fitzroy

The session will finish with a look at the retail trends that will impact the commercial aspects of the lifestyle and interiors markets. Have a fashion moment at: The Henry Talbot fashion exhibition.

Henry Talbot- © Lynette Anne Talbot

In 1983 commercial photographer Henry Talbot donated his archive to the National Gallery of Victoria.  Among the negatives, contact strips and prints were the foundations for the NGV’s latest exhibition titled ‘Henry Talbot: 1960s Fashion Photographer’.

Previous collaborators include renowned international fashion photographer, Helmut Newton. The two founded Flinders Lane Studio back in the 60s and since then Talbot is synonymous with contemporary fashion, popular culture and the unique way he joined dots between the two to exemplify the ‘emerging youth culture of these exuberant times’.

With a reputation as the ‘Australian Sartorialist in the 60s’ the exhibition spans the entire decade, featuring everything from vintage Vogue editorials to double denim- youth-infused-60s goodness, this one is not to be missed.

NGV Australia, Level 3. Until  21 Aug 16 Open 10am–5pm daily

Grab a drink at: South Press Wine House. The stylish wine bar ticks all the boxes when it comes to interiors and wine list, complete with a cheese, charcuterie and olive offering.
