The leather tunics from The Planet of the Apes, The Flintstones, Raquel Welch in One Million Years B.C., Diane Fossey, and the Prehistoric Era. These were Christopher Kane’s inspirations this season. The result was a collection of animal print sweaters, photo-prints of Digit the gorilla on t-shirts and dresses, leather jackets and skirts, plus marabou trim on sheers. Half-circle 3-D geometric shapes represented the scales of a dinosaur, albeit a benign cartoon version, rendered as they often were in chiffon or in brightly colored leather. Kane has been so lauded since he came onto the London fashion scene that it is easy to forget that that was just two years ago. Kane is still a very young and growing talent. This is a designer with many seasons ahead, some collections will be more directional than others, some more wearable, but so far it seems clear that he will always be a bright light of refreshing originality.
