Meet London illustrator (and the queen of doodles): Felicity Marshall

Print and Graphics play a large role here at WGSN and influence everything from fashion to lifestyle and interiors. Recently we headed down to London’s Pick Me Up Festival, a festival held at Somerset house, dedicated to celebrating print and illustration talent. We met up with Felicity Marshall and she even did a printastic WGSN Instagram takeover for us.

Post takeover we grabbed some time with her to ask about her #career goals, distinctive illustration style and how she uses her social media platform to get more gigs.

Hi Felicity, so tell us, just how did you become an illustrator- were you drawing since you were a kid, or did you take a career change later on?

I’ve been drawing since I was really young. My Dad was a draftsman and a really good artist so he always encouraged me and taught me from a fairly young age. I started off my career as an illustrator but then got more into graphic and print design as the years went on; I like to keep it all fairly diverse.

How did you develop such a distinctive style?

Firstly, thanks! Secondly, it happened naturally over the years to be honest. I’ve chopped and changed my style quite a bit but there are certain themes that I always seem to come back to: female form, foliage, palm trees and so on.

What method(s) do you use when creating your imagery? Are you addicted to Photoshop/illustrator?

It depends on the job or image. I’ll usually start off with a drawing and scan it in to digitise it through the means of Photoshop or Illustrator.

Why do you love being part of Pick Me Up Festival?

It’s a great event, you get to meet loads of interesting people and see some amazing work. It’s a good platform for artists and designers to showcase their work and gain some more exposure. It’s a fun, relaxed atmosphere too and the interactive workshops and talks separate it from a lot of other graphic/art fairs.

How much of a role does social media play – as a means of getting your work out there?

In my opinion, social media plays quite a big role in exposure these days…there are so many outlets for people to have their work on (Instagram, Facebook, websites, Tumblr) that the catchment of people seeing/viewing it is so large, resulting in a higher probability of people buying prints or commissioning you for a job.

How does the city of London inspire you?

In so many ways. It’s such a diverse city that seems to constantly be changing and evolving, it’s hard to get bored here. There’s so much to offer in the way of inspiration: galleries both big and small, the amazing libraries, cafes, The Barbican, the architecture, the people. I have lived here for twelve years now and I’m still not fed up of it.

What’s next for you?

I’m currently working on some prints for the SS17 Topman Design show, which will be in June. Then I’m heading to LA for an extended holiday to see some friends, go on a road trip, see the Eames house, go to the LACMA, go to the beach and potentially get some new ideas for an exhibition I want to do at the end of the summer in London.
