Set to be released in the US on December 22nd, Sofia Coppola’s new film Somewhere is both a comeback for nineties star Stephen Dorff and a beautifully quiet portrait of a disaffected Hollywood.
Somewhere tells the story of Johnny Marco (Dorff), a hard partying actor drowning in Los Angeles ennui and the relationship with his daughter (Elle Fanning). Like Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, Somewhere grants the viewer rare access to a privileged and isolated world, but this time it’s the Chateau Marmont and not Versailles. Through a subtle stylistic lens Coppola makes pretty and disaffecting films that rely on simplicity and subtlety to paint the portrait of relationships and Somewhere is no different.
Coppola has said she wrote much of the script after giving birth to her first daughter. With the help of her boyfriend, Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars, the soundtrack adds to Somewhere’s intimacy and heartbreak.
Coppola became the first American female director to win the Golden Lion, Venice’s Film Festival’s top prize for the movie.
