On January 17th, MTV will debut an American adaptation of the hit UK teen series Skins.
Like its British counterpart, the American version uses real life teenagers to write script material and edit web promotions. Co-creator Brian Elsley even enlisted the help of a Brooklyn casting agent who in turn put out viral casting calls on Facebook and mtv.com for amateur actors and hip bands.
The American version will be set in an anonymous northeastern city and many of the plot lines and characters will be lifted from the British Skins, however, there are some new uniquely American additions, like, a lesbian cheerleader.
For MTV, Skins will be a departure from its usual heavy reality rotation, but David Janollari, head of the network’s scripted development team promises that the show will be rooted in a very real look at teen centric life in America, adding “Millennials are all about authenticity.”
