We’ve still got some wonderful weeks of summer ahead of us, but I’m going to go ahead and call this one now: MGMT and The Ting Tings at McCarren Park Pool on July 27th was the show of the summer. It also had the cutest and trendiest and most fashionable crowd of any show I’ve been to since Coachella. (Yes, it’s possible to be both fashionable and trendy – just ask the girls from Topshop who were staffing a photo booth of their own at the pool.) The line for entry to the free gig was mind-boggling – thousands of people queued completely around the massive venue in clumps of 3 or 4 people. Just imagine the turnout if it had not been drizzling rain. Katie and Jules Ting kicked off their set – as they always do – with “We Walk”. This is the last summer for live music and parties at McCarren Pool (they’re going to make it a pool again), but I’ll never forget the image of Katie White with one drumstick raised high in the air while huge lightning strikes lit up the sky behind the stage. The weather actually cleared up quite a bit by the time MGMT played. Ultimately, the rain just seemed to make the atmosphere a little more special and unique. Our own little Glastonbury in Williamsburg’s backyard. (More photos of the stylish and the brave tomorrow.) xo eddie
