This new Instagram-worthy haven and exciting retail space in Marrakech is a must-visit, says WGSN contributor Kelley Mullarkey
A favourite among designers from Yves Saint Laurent to Matthew Williamson, the allure of Marrakech has always drawn creatives, travellers and the fashion crowd alike.
With its unique fusion of European, African and Arab influences, the vibrant Moroccan city is deeply rooted in heritage and history. However its modern cutting-edge galleries, hotels, restaurants and a new museum dedicated to Yves Saint Laurent, slated for September 2017, are not to be overlooked.
Only opening its doors about a year ago, Riad Jardin Secret has welcomed guests from around the globe to its boutique accommodation and most recently soft launched its on-site concept shop.
Owners Cyrielle & Julien have transformed their laid-back riad into a magical green oasis located in the city’s Medina. Since trading in their jobs within the fashion industry in Paris to live full time in Marrakech, they’ve used their fashion and design sensibility to create five incredibly stylish rooms, an Instagram worthy rooftop terrace filled with lush plants and magnificent views and a vegan friendly restaurant.
Having maintained its traditional design and authenticity during the full restoration, the riad’s decor is a stunning mix of artisanal preservation, intimate nooks, Cyrielle’s film photography and artful pieces picked up during the couple’s various travels; so opening a shop was a natural progression.
Beautifully curated, the lifestyle collection includes a little bit of everything from vegan shoes, textiles, mud cloth pouches, bespoke one-off embroidered kaftans designed by Cyrielle in collaboration with a local artisan and home accessories. Each piece focuses on high quality craftsmanship, sustainability and local talent.
The shop is also the exclusive Marrakech stockist for LRNCE, founded in 2013 by Belgian designer Laurence Leenaert. Inspired by the rituals of global tribes, her quirky pieces include fringe raffia sandals, woodbags, pastel kimonos and handmade woven baskets.
Carpets from Rwina (meaning ‘positive chaos’ in Arabic), the collaboration between Laurence and fashion stylist Lisa Lapauw are some of the stand out items carried here as well.
Their rugs are all carefully hand woven and hand embroidered by local artisans in Marrakech. The combination of craftsmanship and the modern interpretation of Moroccan symbols make these pieces ideal for those looking to strike a perfect balance between honest handmade beauty and unique interior design.
Now becoming a local meeting spot for photographers, designers and industry insiders, Riad Jardin Secret is the perfect place in Marrakech to shop, eat, sleep and meet an eclectic travel driven mix of creatives.
