London: An austere monochrome schoolgirl was Margaret Howell’s point of reference this season, her simple uniform of olive and grey peacoats and trousers enlivened only by jaunty pom-pom berets and the occasional Fair-Isle pattern. Pared-down to the essentials, the collection provided a number of wardrobe basics such as cashmere sweater sets, pleated cotton skirts and tapered jersey pants. But beyond these pieces and nicely tailored outerwear, Howell didn’t inspire much excitement with her dark palette, demure hemlines and lack of detailing. When color and movement did appear, as with a chartreuse silk button-up and skirt combination or a Russian blue shirtdress, it was a welcome addition to this overly restrained presentation.—Nina Stotler
